Adults Book Reviews

The Black Canary by Jane Louise Curry

I read this book based on a review. While I was compelled to read to the end to see how everthing was resolved, I was often confused with all the running about- I just couldn't get a good picture in my mind

Karen Corless

The Sword of Shannara by Terry Brooks

This is a great read. Brooks does a wonderful job of keeping the reader involved in the story. The Characters are diverse and each one brings something different to the story. Definitly one of the great fantasy stories.

Very Good

The New Year's Quilt by Jennifer Chiverini

This is a fun and easy-to-read book. It is about Sylvia compson's life from a young child to a late-in-life new bride. Sylvia's grandmother tells her that she always reflects on the last year before she makes New Year resolutions for the coming year. The authors ties quilt patterns into the story and the people and events into the lives and events of sylvia and her family members. I wuld recommend the book to anyone who likes family and their heritages.

User Unfriendly by Vivian Vande Velde

This book hs a good concept, but it becomes chaotic and hard to follow in a few plces. There are too many protagonists to keep track of and it's hard to remember their eventual goal. It is a good read once, but I don't think I would read it again.

Brielle Hansen

Children of the Mind by Orson Scott Card

It was a really good book.

Josh Witt

The Moving Finger by Agath Christie

My First Agatha Christie and it was wonderful- full of richness and color. I loved the mystery, too. I had all the pieces but didn't realize it until it was put togerther!

The Rumpelstiltskin Problem by Vivian Vande Velde

This book is excellent. It is a collection of stories unlike any I've ever read. All the stories are the same story- the story of Rumpelstiltskin. At the same time, all the stories are completely different. Vivian Vande Velde is the queen of exploring different perspectives in classic fairy tales, and she is at the top of her game in this book

Brielle Hansen

Twenty Wishes by Debbie McComber

This book seems to be one of a series, but it stood on it's own also. It was thoughtful, and predictable, but pleasant enough to read in the abscence of something more exciting.

Terry Anderson

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee

Great morals- unusual demonstrations of love, wisdom and mercy- made me look at myself and my own prejudices, fears, parenting style, and i learned new ways of thinking from this book. Well told story- believable, except I don't believe any al\ittle 3rd grader could have realized the "sin" to kill a mocking bird would have any relavance to prosecuting a mentally lacking murderer. If Addicus had made the connection and explanation to his daughter, I would have valued the complete work more.

Mary W. Wray

A Christmas Story by Jean Shepard

Robert E. Lee by Mary L. Williamson (Audio Book)

This was written for youn dults, but I enjoyed learning more about the General for the south. This wsn't too long or boring, but brought the man to life, with many sotories and interesting examples from his life. And now I  know who "Traveler" was! i would recommend this for those who care about history.

Terry Anderson

Drummer in the Dark by T Davis Bunn

Travel, mystery, romance, politics- this book has it all. A compelling tale set in the world of international finance. ( I got a bit bogged down with some of the financial aspects.) I'm adding T. Davis Bunn to my reading list.

Karen Corless

The Great Gathering by Chad Daybell

This book discussed different families and how the last days could play out. These families lived in Utah and the evil in the world escalated. The Prophet called for members to go to specific places. Many members chose to stay and met destruction. This books was written well and it helped me understand how it could be.

The King of Torts by John Grisham

Like many of John Grisham's books, this one is about an attorney, Clay Carter. He began his career as a Public Defender, but soon is able to get his own office with paralegals and other attorneys working for him. His office files lawsuits againts drug companies for thousands of clients that his office acquired by solicitations.

It is interesting to read how this is done and the story is good and fun to read. The book shows how the love of money can change a personvalues and ideas.

This book is an easy read and is good 's from beginning to end

Desire of Our Hearts by Sariah Wilson

This is a wonderful fiction story that weaves the Book of Mormon King Noah and conversion of Alma. It was a story with romance and drama and it really helped me understand how it was. My favorite character was Sam who was fiesty and independant.

Kara Yancey

A great Combination of Jewish and Christian history in a fiction format
Easy reading, good story lines

Pit Dragon Tilogy by Jane Yolen

This book is great. You will cheer when the boy Jakkin finally gets a
Dragon egg and manages to hide it from everone. Of course he also
shows the benefits of hard work. I liked it so well- I'm checking it out again.

Kathleen Nuttall

Leadership & Self-Deception by Arbinger Institute

This book teaches others about being true to themselves-most importantly
never self-betraying. The basic principle consists of being "in the box" as
compared with "out of the box" which is a principle that is, of course, explained
 further in the book.

The Confessor, A death in Vienna, Prince of Five by Daniel Silva

Daniel Silva is an excellent writer! Great Character development, riviting
story line, occasional language.
This trillogy combines historic/current events in Europe and the Middle East.

And Then There Were None By Agatha Christie

This is one of Agatha Christie's best and most ingenious novels. This is a book on tape and is skilfully read by one narrator. this novel is one that you will want to listen to (or read) several times. Christie has crafted the novel so well, with many clues, that you will probably be baffeled at the end of the story. Then two suprises await and you will immediately rewind the last tape and listen to the ending very carefully. Then you will want to listen to the novel again. I know I did!

Christy Stein

The Counterfeit by Robison Wells

Written by an LDS author, this book didn't have too many religious references. It seemed to be the second part of a story, and left room to have another added in the series. It was a little far fetched, but still very interesting, with funny lines. I enjoyed the humor.

Terry Anderson

Chance Encounter by Jennie Hansen

Enjoyed it very much.

Teresa Lovelace

Down the Great Unknown by Edward Dolneck

Loved it! Documentary on discovery of  the Green River, Colorado River and the Grand Canyon by John Wesley Powell!

Chris Hobbs

Nancy: a Portrait of My Years with Nancy Reagan by Michael K. Deaver

I appreciated learning more about this former first lady, and her strength. She approached her husband's Alzheimer illness with calm and dignity, and showed her true love of him. I would recommend this to anyone as it didn't go into too much detail, flowed smoothly, and was easy to listen to the CD-Book.
Very Good!

Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier

The author said of her book- it is a study of jealousies. At first I was wearied by the descriptions
and on going thoughts of the narrator. The author began the story without a name for her because
she hadn't thought of a good name. As her writing progressed she decided not to name her. This
enhanced her felf concept as being inferior to Rebecca. The mystery captivated me. The abrupt
ending left me wanting to give the book a different ending.

Mary W. Wray

Brink of Death by Brandilyn Collins

First in a three book series. It is a great mystery with twists and turns. It is intriguing byt yet has
clean language.  It was a read.

Jamy Corbett

Before the Dawn by Dean Hughes

This book was about how it really was to live as an LDS woman in the depression. The book really
delved into the attitudes of people who suffered and not judging other so harshly. The main character
thought everone was judging her when really the Depression was hard on everyone in every kind of way.
I read the book because I love the author, but I really enjoyed the personal account of how it was then.

Kara Yancey

Mummy's the Word by Kerry Blair

A masterful mystery-wonderful colorful characters you fall in love with and the star you totally feel for.
A good mystery that wraps up well in the end!
